Balikbayan box weight for all customers, freight forwarders, shippers, companies, movers, drivers, warehouses, agents, owners and managers! 1. DOT Department of Transportation: The department of transportation regulates closely overweight vans, cargo trucks, trailers, semi-truck w/trailers and containers traveling on US roadways.
At a minimum fines are levied for being overweight, and from experience I can tell you that overweight loads have not been permitted to move until another container arrived that could handle the excess weight.
So how can shippers insure no fines or delays due to weight restrictions. They will not overweight the vans, trucks or containers subjected to DOT regulations. It makes sense to not have extra cost in fines and other penalties. That helps to keep customer cost down!
How does this affect the customer...YOU? To give an example that will make sense to everyone, a 40 foot containers can hold about 425 boxes, so if the average weight per box is 54 kilos, then the container cargo would weigh about 23133 kilos. Even thou the container can handle the weight, the driver/company would have to pay fines for approximately 4535 to 4989 kilos of excess weight to the department of transportation and would probably not be allowed to move until the weight was transferred and the fines were paid.
You need to think about this in terms of your box! When vans, trailers, cargo trucks or semi-trucks are loaded they will be kept UNDER the legal weight limit. The boxes that cause the vehicle to be overweight will have to wait until the next load is taken. Loading your boxes to maximum weight can and does cause boxes to get left for the next shipment.
In the example above where a container can hold 425 boxes, in order to be road legal for the department of transportation about 100 boxes would have to wait for the next shipment.
In this example if every box was 13 kilos less, every single box would be able to be loaded in that container which benefits EVERYONE!!!!!! Isn't that what you all want? No one wants there box to be delayed, but customs, weather and other things cause delay. As a customer of any balikbayan box shipper you can help to avoid delays simply caused by weight.
2. People are the ones that load these boxes on pallets, in trucks, in vans, in containers and deliver these boxes to your loved ones. The heavier the box the harder they are to deliver and the more stress it puts on the labor workers that handle these boxes for you, remember they are trying to deliver your boxes quickly and safely to your family and friends.
3. Each individual box has a weight limit stamped on it, usually on the bottom in a circular stamp. The stamp may be red or black or another color that will show up well on the color of the box. More weight in the box than what is stamped on the box voids the integrity of the flaps and the sides of the box than it can handle.
Be thoughtful, be kind, Salamat Po
